When did Michigan's SR2S program
begin?
From 2003-05 the Michigan Department
of Transportation partnered with the
Governor's Council on Physical
Fitness, Health and Sports/Michigan
Fitness Foundation to administer a
Safe Routes to School pilot program
at 11 elementary schools around the
state. The purpose of the pilot was
to develop a set of materials and
procedures that any Michigan
elementary school could use to begin
its own SR2S initiative. When the
pilot ended in 2005 the program was
expanded statewide and made
available to all schools.
