Safe Routes to School Funding

Important Update!
updated 1-7-10

The United States Congress has acted to extend the federal Safe Routes to School program, which provides funding for state programs, until February 28, 2010. Additional extensions are anticipated until a full reauthorization of the transportation bill is approved. The type of funding mechanism Congress uses (i.e. the length of a continuation bill) determines the amount of funding that will be available.

Safe Routes to School (SRTS) funding applications received prior to December 31, 2009 are under review with an anticipated award announcement
1 in early March 2010. Note that a March funding award announcement is contingent on Congress providing funding at a level that will support a funding award. If Congressional action is delayed or short-term, a funding award announcement will be delayed until adequate funding is available.

SRTS funding applications received after December 31, OR applications that are incomplete and for which additional requested information was not received by December 31 will be reviewed during the next review cycle
(see below). Once Congress passes the next transportation authorization, we will publish a SRTS application planning guide, with dates and guidance, to assist with project timeline planning. Under current consideration is a schedule of quarterly funding award announcements.

Please be aware that the Michigan SR2S Handbook provides materials and procedures by which local school and community teams can identify and plan to address barriers to walking and bicycling to school. Many of the strategies to encourage and enable students to walk or bicycle to school have low or no associated cost.
