Interested in starting a Safe Routes to School program at your school? Attending a training session is the place to begin!

All attendees will receive:

  1. The Safe Routes to School Handbook, an easy-to-use guide that explains how to start and sustain a Safe Routes to School program. Attendees representing a registered elementary or middle school or a qualified non-profit will receive a hardbound copy (one per school/agency). All other attendees will receive an electronic version of the Handbook.

  2. A CD containing templates of flyers, letters, surveys, press releases and more that can be customized and used to promote and evaluate your program.

  3. Hands-on experience in using the Handbook, including effective strategies for team building, data collection, conducting walking audits and developing Action Plans.

  4. Information on funding sources available to Safe Routes to School programs.

  5. On-going support from the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness, Health and Sports/Michigan Fitness Foundation and its network of transportation, health, and safety officials and educators.

  6. Lunch, refreshments and all training materials.

There is no charge to attend, but space is limited and pre-enrollment is required. Call 1-800-434-8642 or e-mail Andrea Cawthray at acawthray@michiganfitness.org to enroll.

Additional training information:

  • Schools and organizations can send up to two (2) trainees.

  • Training begins at 9:15 a.m. and concludes by 3:00 p.m., unless otherwise specified.

  • Training occurs, to the extent possible, in facilities that permit authentic assessment of barriers to safe walking.

  • Participants should dress comfortably and for the weather; a walking audit occurs under all conditions except severe storms.

  • Trainings may be cancelled for insufficient enrollment—or added.

  • Pre-enrollment for training is required.
